2006 Road King Reviews

  1. :freaky Hello all I thought I would give a review of my Harley. Some may care others won't. First impressions the bike is beautiful, you can'y beat Harley styling. The Japs try but they don't have it.
I now have 25,000 miles on it. The bike has run flawless, it has never skipped a beat. Well at least since I put on Rhinehart true duals and dyno tuned. The bike was a little lean before that and did sometimes have a hesitation off idle. Many bikes are too lean from the factory, to pass the EPA standards. I toured with my dad, he was on a Harley electra glide that got 60mpg. Im sure it was on the lean side, but showed no ill effects. Back to the Road King the motor purrs like a kitten, pulls great all around. I have abused the bike as far as doing burnouts. Riding it like a drag bike and generally flogging the shit out of it. I don"t think you can break the stock motor. The engine is rubber mounted and has no counter balance. At a stop while idling the whole bike vibrates, but as soon as you let out the clucth it all stops. You only feel the power pulses of the twin. There is no vibration at any speed.
The brakes are great now, at first the front brakes sqeaked like mad, I believe it was a factory defect with the road king custom model, The rim and brake combo sets up a harmonic vibration that squeaks like mad. I think all of the customs do it. Harley may remedy this under warranty, but I put on floating rotors that solved the problems. The brakes have a great feel and do the job.
The handling of the bike is good it is very stable and solid feeling ,even two up. It doesn't have much lean angle. And above 80 while cornering the bike starts to wobble. Its predictable and forgiving. I have a friend that descibes it as riding one of those old swing bikes. The ones that pivot in the middle. I ride the bike very hard. Below 80 cornering it handles well. I have tried to ride it like a sport touring bike, which it is not. Those who crave performance in handling will be bored as I have been after many miles in the twisties.
The ergonomics of the bike are great it is comphy to ride all day.
The bike looks great, cool looking bar hopper. Add the windshield and tour pack and you can log some serious miles. I did add a riders backrest which I love. It makes it as comphy as a recliner.
I have had many motorcycles mostly dirt bikes and I still am an avid dirt rider. My next bike is a Ducati Hypermotard, just waiting the arrival.
I love the Road King it is a great all aroung bike.
I want to have at least four bikes.
A cruiser/touring bike The Harley Roadking
    A dirt bike Honda CR250
A dual sport KTM adventure (don't have one yet but it's on the list)
and a fun street bike the Hypermotard
I have never been interested in a sport bike except for the track they are too uncomfortable for most riding.
I am sure I will always have the Harley its great fun and a timeless machine.:clap

    Nice!
The bike is pretty as well.
  3. Nice machine! There is definitely something special about Harley's when you walk into a showroom. I can't quite peg it though? Nothing ages like a Harley too. Cool today and 20 years from now. I was almost ostracized from my family when I bought a Beemer. My dad would go off the wall if I ever bought a Harley. His uncle had a ton of them when he was a boy and they made a lasting impression. My coworker just bought a Road King that he hasn't picked up yet. He bought a K1200RS two years ago that he hardly rides. Deep down he is a Harley guy and I'm happy for him. Maybe someday I will get one?
  4. Absolutely gorgeous! And the bike is nice too.

  6. I have a new 96 ci King. It is classic in the same way a Porsche 356 is and probably puts out about the same power...maybe less. It is also provides one of the most visceral, and thoroughly engaging riding experiences of any of the scoots that have passed through my garage. It's a keeper.
  7. Red Rock Canyon is great spot to sit and enjoy the view isn't it?
  8. That there is a Road King Custom. Just sold mine about three weeks ago. Had 15k on it and no problems. I also had the Rhineharts, but I also chased a backfire problem between shifts. Not all the time. But enough to bug me. My was fuel injected and I am sure it was just a matter of getting the right download. I miss mine already. Enjoy your ride. They both look great.

  9. Almost as good as that new Triumph thing.
  10. Sweet King, and good review.
  11. Didn't think they had anything new on the cruiser side
  12. I have a 96 Road King Police model...and keep thinking I need to sell it, then I take it to New MExico and I know I can't. I rode from Houston to Tuscon in one day and didn't feel beat up at all......love that bike.

Ya gotta like what you ride. If you don't then get something else. I'm glad you like your Road King. H-D does make nice looking bikes, not my cup of tea, but as long as you are a "rider" and not a poser, then go for it!
  14. To be sure, there are "posers" on all kinds of makes, all kinds of bikes.
  15. That would be all true.
I've seen as muching posing in Joe Rocket Replica Leathers as i have
seen from the Harley Halloween crowd. It's just got a different spin on it.
  16. Good report and nice ride - 25k on the clock - I would say you ride it!

I live in Harley country and see baggers all the time (don't think most have as many miles as yours). Can't see your up close from the pix but there are a few cool mods that I like to set them apart a bit. Love looking at the bikes in the parking lot over a can of suds. Saw a cool one called a T-Sport Duce - made it back in 2001-02. Kind of a mix between a RK and a 2.

Bet there's plenty of cool day rides around Vegas - ever go to Valley of Fire?

  17. I miss my Road King Custom. I really do.

    20K troublefree miles.

I ditched those stupid beachbars before I picked it up.

  18. I would like to introduce ya'll to "Roxanne' my sexy black bitch. She's a 2000 RK with fuel injection. Roxy is sitting at a little over 84.5 K on the odometer.
I picked her up when I lived in California and we now reside in Ga. She's been to Canada and all over the states. Put my wife on the back and pull our camper as well. She's never let me down or left me stranded. I'm gunning to have 100K on her this year. Last Friday we spent the day riding with a buddy on a Beemer all through N. GA & N.C. twisties. As long as your smooth she'll roll right through the corners, but with the clearance issues she ain't a knee dragger. Put her on the open road she's hard to beat.. This was Mothers Day weekend on my way back from FL...

  19. Yeah, pretty much. :thumb

Just had to throw mine in here.

Gawd, I love it. Took it to the Eastern Rondy at Hot Springs. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handled!

I'll probably buy another dual sport, another sport bike...but at this point I'm pretty sure I'll always have an HD in the stable regardless of what's tucked in there with it. I'm hooked.

PS - it did well on gravel, too.
